SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse student-athletes and staff hosted a Turkey Giveaway on Sunday at the Lally Athletics Complex. The group distributed 300 turkeys to Syracuse area residents at the event sponsored by the IBEW Local 43/-NECA Finger Lakes Chapter.
“It is so important for us to give back to the Syracuse community by supporting them as much as they support us,” said rowing junior Lauren Coop. “We are immensely grateful for the Syracuse community and for their positive impact on our culture and experience at Syracuse University. The turkey giveaway is one way we can give show our appreciation.”
Student-athletes from Syracuse’s men’s and women’s rowing, football, men’s and women’s soccer, cheer and dance teams and Otto the Orange engaged with the community for three hours distributing turkeys, posing for photos and signing autographs.
“We know Syracuse Athletics is such an important part of the Central New York culture and for us to have the opportunity to give back and help those who are less fortunate today is really what the holiday spirit is all about,” said Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack.
“It is important to know that we are part of the community, we are not separated from it,” said soccer student-athlete Mags Thornton. “We want to give back, help out and let others know we are here for them.”
It is the second Syracuse Athletics Turkey Giveaway. In 2022, student-athletes from the men’s and women’s rowing and men’s and women’s track and field teams travelled to Buffalo to giveaway 100 turkeys to the community impacted by the mass shooting in Buffalo that happened in May 2022 at a Tops Friendly Markets supermarket in the East Side neighborhood.
“It is always important when you might be a little more fortunate to give back and make the most of your blessings and try to bless somebody else,” said football student-athlete Isaiah Johnson.
